AUTHOR'S NOTE:
WHITE RAVEN was partly inspired by the true story of an angry environmentalist who sawed down a rare Golden Spruce in the old growth forests of British Columbia, to force people to pay attention to his cause. It would seem hypocritical to destroy the thing you are trying to preserve, and his rationale was that this rare 300-year-old tree was receiving undue attention and special protection, while other trees were being wantonly cut down by the forestry industry. In Haida myth, the story goes, a young boy became the Golden Spruce when he disobeyed his grandfather and stole a glance at his burning village as they fled the destruction.
The title WHITE RAVEN came from a local albino raven that hatched in 1996 in Port Clements BC, near the site of the Golden Spruce. This white raven was the official mascot of the town, and during its lifetime was the subject of many a tourist photograph.
