Dylan surfed for hours pausing only for hydration and one serving of guilt-inspiring chili cheese fries, which he ate in the Jeep, just to see if there was a message, anything from her. No luck.

By evening when he traded the gear back in and started for the hotel, his day of a high mood had been ground up like the sand he'd trudged though all day. He'd convinced himself she would've called - but the silent screen showed no such luck. Had last night even meant anything to her? No goodbye kiss, no discussion of the seriousness of their sharing...Did women do this? Be intimate and not look back?
