VINTAGE ORIGINAL COLOR MINI-POSTER BY WILL BRADLEY FOR "THE AULT AND WIBORG COMPANY: Makers of Lithographic and Letter Press Printing Inks...."
A strong Art Deco image on a 12 inch high by 9 inch wide sheet. The image illustrates two men in early costumes with leggings standing on either side of a lettered plaque containing the text, with mirrors and candles behind the men. A garland of flowers decorating the lower portion of the poster completes the image. Signed "Bradley" in print within the image at middle right. The text promoting the company's inks lists the colors and their prices along the bottom: "Granite Tint, $1.00. 641-27. Light Brown, $1.50. 647-16. Dark Green, $2.00. 647-15. Dark Brown, $2.00. 441-33. Orange, $2.00. 647-14. Black, $1.50. 633-61". Stab marks along the uneven left border indicate this poster-ad appeared in a publication of the period, specifically "The Inland Printer". Additional text, printed in Capri Blue on the verso, also advertises the company's inks. There are a couple of very light creases.
Specifically designed by Bradley as mini-posters, these Ault & Wiborg poster-ads appeared in printing and trade periodicals of the day, including the "Inland Printer", "Typothetae and Platemaker" and "Printing Art". This particular ad is identified as having been published in the January 1900 issue of the Inland Printer by Anthony Bambace on pages 169-171 of his book "Will H. Bradley: His Work / A Bibliographical Guide". The numbers identifying the colors vary slightly from those noted by Bambace. Light Brown, here numbered "647-16" is numbered "647-10" by Bambace. Dark Brown, here numbered "441-33" is numbered "426-36" by Bambace.
