Thread cutting attachment

One of the great advantages of owning a lathe is the ability to cut threads. This attachment works on both inch and metric versions of the Sherline lathe and allows inch or metric pitch threads to be cut on either machine. By gearing the rotation of the spindle to the movement of the crosslide, a threat pitch ratio is established, allowing a 60° pointed tool to cut threads from 5 TPI (threads per inch) to 80 TPI or .25 mm pitch to 2.0 mm pitch, and most can be cut either left-hand or right-hand. A set of 15 hobbed aluminum gears offers all the combinations you need. The motor/speed control is removed for theading operations and the spindle is driven by a large 4 handwheel (provided). Though this might sound like a step backwards compared to powered threading attachments on larger lathes, for small theads this actually gives you the exacting control you need to start and stop just where you want. Compare the variety of thread sizes you can cut with this optional attachment to any of the lathes with built-in back gears for threading. Most offer a very limited range of threads.
