The-Monologfue-of-Cyano-de-Bergerac

The biographical sketch of Cyrano Savinien includes the tumultuous times of 17th Century France especially under Louis XIII when matters were settled with the sword, a time when Galileo verified the Copernican NOT the ptolemaic Aristotelian concept of the universe by making public "Dialago" (1632) coming face to face with the Pope and the Inquisition of the Holy Office. Beginning the "Age of Reason" the time of Cardinal Richelieu part of the philosophical resolve was intended to defeat ignorance as well as superstition. In 1636 when Cyrano was 17 years of age Paris, France was gated, roads impassable, no working system of justice, sorcery tribunals frequent and rapier duels were legal. This ninety minute drama, a story-telling monologue, is adapted from the 1897 play, "Cyrano de Bergerac," by French playwright Edmond Rostand, translated in 1923 from the French by American literary, Brian Hooker. Incorporated are a few passages from "Voyages to the Moon," written by Cyrano de Bergerac himself probably by 1648 and this special acknowledgement is due to another American literary, Richard Aldington, both for researching documents and comments on the life of Cyrano de Bergerac and for translating "Voyages to the Moon and Sun" from the French.
