The complete prosthesis (dental lab technology articles Book 11)

In the following article the author treats a case with removable complete prostheses. He demonstrates the appropriate steps, taking the patient's demands in terms of aesthetics and function into consideration.

The 58 year old patient decided to seek dental treatment for her severely advanced chronic periodontitis, which had caused extreme teeth movement, deep periodontal pockets, extrusions and damage to the upper and lower molars. She was not pleased with the aesthetics nor the function and therefore accepted the option of a removable complete prosthetic solution. She refused periodontal treatments, implants and any fixed prosthesis option.

Pre-treatment

After taking the impression for the anatomic model and mounting of the models in the articulator, the teeth were extracted and already fabricated immediate prostheses were placed in the mouth. After the extractions, the occlusion was checked periodically and the prostheses were stabilized with resilient acrylic.
Approximately six months after the surgical procedure and after the proper healing of the edentulous jaw ridge, the first impressions are taken with the Schreinemaker metal impression tray. They arer lined with alginate (Figure 1) and sent to the laboratory where they are cast with hard plaster, category III.
