In the early summer of 1843, a newspaper reports that Lady Marian drowned in a small seaside resort frequented by invalids.

Thomas Seymour is applying for a post in the Home Office through the patronage of his Uncle, Lord Amberley. He is asked to clear up a small mystery: did the late Lady Marian write to a former Home Secretary that she feared for her life? The letter was regarded as a hoax at the time.

Thomas duly investigates, and finds far more than he bargained for ... nothing is what it seems, except the true love he encounters when he least expects it.
