Lucy and Kentucky Jones left Philadelphia €“ and all their friends €“ when their family moved to St. Louis in 1904. They were a little nervous at first. The new city was the Wild West to them. But like most kids, they were quick to adapt to their new surroundings, which offered all sorts of excitement €“ including the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, a World€s Fair!

And then they met Robert James, who had been a legendary Texas Ranger in his day, known far and wide as Cowboy Bob. He invited Lucy and Kentucky to visit his nearby ranch, Kickapoo, where he recounted his amazing tales in the tepee where his close friend, a mysterious medicine man named Kanakuk, lived.

THE PURLOINED PONIES is the first of the adventures that Cowboy Bob shared with Lucy and Kentucky. It is a mystery about horse thieves. Or, more accurately, pony thieves, who are stealing the beloved companions of children who live near Fort Lincoln in the Wyoming Territory just after the Civil War.
