Shaman, Sister, Sorceress: An Urban Fantasy Thriller (Olivia Lawson Techno-Shaman Book 3)
If techno-shaman Olivia Lawson thinks a trip to the Hopi mesas is the escape she needs, she is gravely mistaken. Abducted from her tour, Livvy quickly discovers that all is not as it seems in the quiet villages.
Formidable shamans draw her into a bitter and centuries-old conflict. While Livvy struggles to do what’s right, she can’t help but pursue an unexpected chance to be with the man she loves.
But as prophecies turn deadly, even the gods of the Multiverse play their part and Livvy must choose–between this world and a new one, between action and acceptance, between duty and desire. With all existence hanging in the balance, Livvy finds that, where choice begins, innocence ends.
Interview with the Author
Q - Readers comment that they feel like they’re learning about anthropology. Do you do a lot of research?A - I’ve done a fair bit of research in the past and continue to do so. I know it’s fiction, urban fantasy and science fiction at that, but I have this compulsion about getting the real world right. The novels aren’t just an opportunity to write action and thrills. Though First, Second, and Third Mesa are not big in terms of geography, they’re
huge in terms of culture. But even in terms of the physical place, we actually visited the mesas and took the tour, just so I could be accurate–and eat blue pancakes!
Q - Are there any themes that run through the novels?A - I’m one of those writers who finds a deeper meaning only after I’ve finished writing. Each novel in the techno-shaman series has Livvy confronting a new aspect to her evolution. Each story takes on the flavor and emotional color of that change. But in hindsight for the entire series, I find that death is always close. Part of that comes from the nature of our heroine’s work. Part of that comes from my desire as a writer to grapple with tough topics. Part of it I simply chalk up to my own interests. That’s a lot of parts.
Q - What was the inspiration for this book?A - I had always envisioned Livvy visiting other places and connecting with the wider world of shamanism. I was keen to give readers a sense of the huge scope of indigenous healing and also some pure escapism. Because the Southwest is only a day’s drive from Los Angeles, I sometimes forget that people come from all over the world to experience it. The Hopi mesas have a harsh but transcendent beauty. Plus the pantheon of Puebloan spirits and the prophecy of the Fifth World were just too much to resist!
