The case is made of steel to protect the lips and provide a surface for press-fitting into the housing, and the lips are made of Buna-N (also called nitrile rubber) with a durometer hardness rating of 90A for resistance to wear, abrasion, oil, and hydraulic fluids. This shaft seal has a helically coiled garter spring to help maintain contact between the sealing lip and the surface of the shaft. It has a temperature range of -40 to 230 degrees F, making it applicable for use in low-temperature hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders.

Radial shaft seals help retain lubricants and other fluids in hydraulic and pneumatic systems by sealing a rotating, oscillating, or reciprocating shaft or rod against its housing.
