And the hottest of all was "Scarsdale Jack," as the American Volunteer Group (AVG) Second Pursuit Squadron Leader, Jack Newkirk, became known to newspaper readers all over America. In the dark early days of World War II, the AVG Flying Tigers made Burma the one place in Asia where a war correspondent could report on American victories over the seemingly invincible Japanese.

Newkirk was killed in March, 1942, during a raid on Japanese bases in North Thailand. There is no question that he had earned his fame. He had been in command of the AVG's defense of Rangoon, credited with 11 victories and decorated by the British government. But there were questions about actions on his last flight that seemed out of character, and added a touch of mystery to the circumstances of that last flight.
