Elasmosaurus is one of the largest known plesiosaurs - a group of marine reptiles that are not dinosaurs, although they lived at the same time. Plesiosaurs first appeared near the end of the Triassic Period and survived to the very end of the Age of Dinosaurs. Many of these marine reptiles had long necks. The Late Cretaceous plesiosaur Elasmosaurus is an extreme case - its neck made up more than half of its total body length! This extraordinary neck probably allowed this huge plesiosaur to quickly dart its tooth-lined jaws toward fishes and other potential prey, even from a distance.
