Ruined! - Can Straight Men Turn Gay? A Gothic Style, Homosexual Romance, Set In Nineteen-Fifty.
“Ruined!“ is an unusual piece of gay pornographic fiction, where the main character's sexuality is put under strain by some extreme circumstances. It explores the thoughts of the male mind and male sexuality, set in a post-war world where things were so different from what they are today!
Is sexuality fixed or can straight men turn gay? Given the right circumstances, can there be straight men who want gay sex?
This is another graphic novel from Richard Peters, which hurls the main character from one sexual encounter to another in riveting and explicit detail.
It is an XXX-rated novel and not intended for those who are under age or who are offended by male/male gay pornography, described in uncompromising detail.
“Ruined!†is a satisfying and stimulating read, on both the homoerotic and emotional levels, in a way that is rarely found in gay erotic fiction.
Here we find a straight young man delving into his homoerotic nature and beyond that into his homosexual side. The whole subject of straight men and gay sex is jumbled up in this provocative, erotic novel.
"Ruined!" is an interesting exposition of "straight" men being "gay". Definitions are blurred. The seedy side of post-war London is also dealt with in this uncompromising novel.
This is a gothic novel in style. Although set in 1950, it contains many elements of a gothic romance and some of the things that happen to the hero of the story are truly horrific!
The summer of 1950, the young virgin, David Morris leaves his fiancé for a trip to Africa on behalf of his legal employers. Inexperienced, he falls prey to the effects of alcohol and the unexpected attentions from the men on-board the ship.
In Morocco he is introduced to hard liquor and hashish and soon attracts the attentions of his hosts.
At last David finds romance with a pretty youth and allows his suppressed attraction for men to be fully expressed in deeply romantic scenes.
But things do not go well for Davis Morris as he sinks into degradation and becomes "ruined".
This novel goes through three phases. Firstly, on-board ship, where a devastatingly handsome sailor befriends him and protects him from the unwanted attentions of the sexually frustrated men. The scenes are profoundly homoerotic between the inexperienced David and the worldly wise, bisexual sailor.
The second phase, takes place in Tangier, where David is thrown into a strange culture with which he is totally unequipped to cope. He finds solace in drugs and alcohol and in the arms of a young homosexual servant. Some of these scenes are brutal and David is mistreated terribly by his hosts and he is "ruined".
Thirdly the novel follows David's life as a "ruined" man. David is degraded even further. These scenes are not for readers who are squeamish about degraded sex. How will he fare now that he is a "ruined" man?
Times were not the same in 1950, the language was not the same. Richard Peters captures the post-war era with clarity. His description of forbidden, homosexual behaviour is stunning. An amusing side note, especially for American readers, is the use of the word "fag" for a cigarette. Some readers may enjoy the description of what the characters do with "fags"!
Richard Peters' works, while containing explicit, gay, erotic porn descriptions never fail to move his readers emotionally.
He has written many other novels and short stories. His favourite themes concern straight men being seduced by other straight, bisexual or gay men. He likes to investigate the sexuality of his characters, as he believes sexuality is not a simple black and white dichotomy (gay/straight). He believes there are many shades of grey in between.
His exciting work is for the discerning gay reader as well as for other adventurous males, willing to discover the edges of their sexuality – if they are brave enough to explore. Of course, he also has a wide female readership who enjoy reading about men with men!
