In the swarm of theories surrounding the concept of nuclear deterrence, these subs serve as Second Strike weapons. In the event of a nuclear first strike that wipes out the command structure of the U.S., these subs were ordered to automatically launch a retaliatory attack heavy enough to wipe out the original attackers. If anyone attacks everybody dies, so nobody attacks. Is it not genius?
