Originally designed by Reginald Joseph Mitchell in 1936, the Spitfire features a sleek airframe and distinctive elliptical wing, which made it aesthetically pleasing but more importantly, it gave the Spitfire exceptional aerodynamic characteristics. Fitted with a 700 horsepower Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and eight wing-mounted .303 Browning machine guns, the Spitfire was a truly deadly adversary, as Luftwaffe pilots soon discovered.
