Blow guns, also called air blow guns or pneumatic blow guns, attach to air lines and are used to manually discharge air for non-contact cleaning or drying purposes in laboratory or industrial applications. Most blow guns are made of metal components, but they are also available in all plastic or a combination of metal and plastic. They typically consist of an ergonomic grip or handle, a trigger, and a nozzle, also called a tip, through which compressed air is delivered. Many also come with extensions to increase the distance between the trigger mechanism and the nozzle. Different styles of blow gun components can be arranged in a variety of configurations to meet the exacting needs of a specific application. Specifications for blow guns include pressure capacity, measured in pounds per square inch (psi); air flow volume, measured in cubic foot per minute (CFM); thrust (the amount of force that exits the nozzle), measured in pound force (lbf); noise level, measured in decibels (dB); and air line connection type, which is typically National Pipe Thread Taper (NPT). Some blow guns meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standard 1910.95 for sound level and standard 1910.242B for maximum pressure with an obstructed or "dead-ended" nozzle.
