The Pitsco 32877 Banty Roaster Solar Cooker provides students in grades 3-12 a hands-on activity to build and use a solar cooker that demonstrates the scientific concepts of solar energy, heat gain, heat loss, and the second law of thermodynamics, and it includes the materials to build one solar cooker using basic tools and cool-melt glue. The kit contains a silver styrene mirror, a foam grip, a metal cooking tube, a 24-inch long wooden dowel, mounting brackets, screws, hex nuts, nuts, nylon washers, nylon spacers, and acrylic parts for the cooker frame. Acrylic is lightweight, and resists shattering, impact, and most non-abrasive cleaners including ammonia and strong detergents. The solar cooker's reflective, parabolic collector surface has an area of 95 square inches that can be adjusted to most effectively capture the sun's rays. The cooker can prepare individual cocktail sausages wrapped in foil to teach students about practical applications for solar energy, and the project reinforces engineering, technology, and math concepts as students experiment with a solar cooker. The finished measurements are 12 x 8 inches (H x W).
