This Palmetto style 1613 flax compression packing seal impregnated with graphite and a petroleum-based lubricant protects pumps and valves from fluid leaks in marine applications. The plaited packing seal is made of long-fiber flax for high tensile strength. The low-friction polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating fills any gaps in the braid to improve sealing and flexibility of the braid, and reduces shaft wear by minimizing drag and heat buildup between the packing and the shaft or stem. A lubricant is added to improve break-in time, further reduce frictional heat, and keep the packing from spinning with the shaft or stem, reducing the chance of scoring and wear.

This packing seal is compatible with media in the pH range of 6-9 (brines, cold water, and oils), has a maximum pressure limit of 400 pounds per square inch (psi), and a shaft speed of 2,200 feet per minute (fpm). It operates at temperatures from -10 to 220 degrees F (-23 to 104 degrees C). Style 1613 is suitable for marine applications such as marine stern tubes, bilge pumps, and rudderposts, among others.
