Today the Yule log has become a traditional pastry, a delicious cake roll, smothered in coffee or chocolate-flavoured icing and decorated with sugared holly leaves and roses. The origins of the Yule log date as far back as the 7th Century. The custom was that on Christmas Eve an enormous log of freshly cut wood called the "Yule log" would be fetched and carried to the house with great ceremony. On Christmas Eve the master of the house would place the log on the hearth and sprinkle the trunk with libations made of oil, salt and mulled wine. Next, suitable prayers would be read. Once the great hearth became ashes the Yule log was replaced by a symbol of it in the form of this pastry.
