PCI & PCI-X Hardware and Software, Sixth Edition

This sixth edition is the only book available based on the latest PCI Local Bus Specification Revision 3.0, MSI-X, PCI-to-PCI Bridge Architecture Specification Revision 1.2, PCI BIOS Specification Revision 2.1, and PCI-X addendum specification Revision 1.0. It is also the only book written by Intel engineers with PCI and PCI-X design experience. Included is a complete tutorial on CD-ROM for PCI and PCI-X basics. All other books are simply incomplete or outdated.

This is the sixth edition of a series of bestselling editions of this book. The fifth edition of this book focused on PCI Local Bus Specification Revision 2.2 and Rev. 2.3. The focus of this edition is PCI Revision Local Bus Specification 3.0, associated specifications, and PCI-X Revision 1.0b. It details the complete hardware and software design requirements and interpretation of these and associated specifications. Of particular note is the information relative to the software structure of PCI which is the basis for BIOS, configuration, and application software of PCI-X and PCI Express. This book does not include PCI-X addendum specification Revisions 2.0 or above which implement the source strobe protocol for point-to-point interconnections. The PCI-X bus segment is inefficient for purposes of point-to-point interconnections; consequently, the future of point-to-point interconnection is PCI Express as a compliment to PCI Revision 3.0 and PCI-X 1.0b bus segments in a platform.

This sixth edition is over 1545 pages and provides the only comprehensive and detailed information available beyond the specifications. In the book there are 920 pages of PCI specific information with comparisons to PCI-X. In the CD-ROM there are 625 additional pages of PCI and PCI-X specific information. In addition, the CD-ROM contains expandable hi-resolution mechanical drawings and tutorials to assist in quickly learning the basics of PCI and PCI-X.

Also in the CD-ROM is a tutorial consisting of over 850 full color power-point slides based on public seminars presented by Intel engineers. The tutorial assists engineers to quickly grasp the basic concepts of PCI and PCI-X. These tutorials do not have to be reviewed prior to reading the book or specifications.
