Old Naga Shell Pendant Necklace
The large carved shell pendant in this necklace is very old, probably from the beginning of the 20th century. It was made by members of the Naga tribes of Northeast India and Burma. Pendants like this were sometimes worn (by men and women) as ear ornaments, as well necklace pendants or belt ornaments. This shell is a nice size, 50mm (2") in diameter, with a simple and graceful spiral design reminiscent of the 4 directions. The pattern is created with a series of tiny dots etched into the shell and inlaid with brown clay. The necklace is strung with some beautiful old turquoise glass bead from Nepal, vintage bamboo coral beads, white ceramic beads (unglazed) and small olive wood saucers from Afghanistan. The brass beads are African cast brass, made through the lost wax process. They have a mellow, darkened patina that fits well with the other vintage beads. This is a fairly long necklace, just over 26" with the pendant. It can be shortened a little if desired, by removing the last few brass beads. You can choose your preferred length and finish (knotted cord ends or clasp) from the Variations menu at checkout.
