Nino Rota
Accordion virtuoso Richard Galliano has proved himself to be exceptionally versatile, having made his mark in all kinds of musical contexts; from establishing the accordion on the Jazz scene through various collaborations with the likes of Chet Baker, Steve Potts and Jimmy Gourley, to his impressive interpretations of classical repertoire, as found on his previous release for DG.
Galliano's new recording follows his acclaimed Bach project, which sold more than 40,000 units. This new album is a tribute to the late composer, Nino Rota, and ties in with Rota s 100th birthday on 3 December.
Rota was the Chaplin of composers. His music combines the sweet and joyous with the pensive and poignant in measures moving and unique. Four jazz musicians join Richard Galliano: Twice Grammy® nominated trumpeter, Dave Douglas; world-class sax and clarinet master improviser, John Surman; terrific bassist, Boris Kozlov; versatile percussionist, Clarence Penn
Le Monde tells us that Richard Galliano is restoring vitality to the accordion. He s not following the revival of the instrument: He s preceding it. Modern, without losing his soul."
Galliano s new album features, as a common thread, the original soundtrack theme of Fellini s film, La Strada. Also included is the Parla più piano theme from The Godfather.
