Mitutoyo 178-954-4A, Surftest SJ-301 Surface Roughness Tester

The Mitutoyo 178-954-4A Surftest SJ-301 is a portable surface roughness tester with an LCD touch screen, customizable 38-parameter measurement capabilities, a built-in graphing and alphanumeric thermal printer, RS232C or statistical process control (SPC) output, and is powered by either an AC adapter or a built-in Ni-H battery that provides approximately 600 measurements per charge. A surf tester, also known as a profilometer, surface roughness tester, roughness gage, surftest, or surface finish gage, is a metrology device used to inspect and measure surface roughness in statistical processing, histogram-based data management, manufacturing, and quality control (QC) applications.

This surface tester has a large (3.94 x 2.76 inches [H x W]) LCD display with a touch-panel screen that allows for customizable parameters, a Go/No-go judgment function, total and sectional measurement results, assessed profiles, bearing area curve (BAC 1/2) calculation, and amplitude distribution curve graphing results. Shop-hardened measure and start buttons resist workshop contaminants. The device has vertical and horizontal recording magnification abilities, and can measure at any orientation, including vertical or upside-down. Auto calibration measures 38 parameters and four profiles, and the device stores up to five measurement sets, including evaluation, sampling, and statistical data. A data-deletion function allows on-screen elimination of flawed data from a calculation prior to an evaluation. Measurement data can be saved in CSV file format using the memory card port, and transferred to a computer for use with compatible spreadsheet software. Internal memory stores up to five measurement sets, and the device can store up to 20 measurement sets with an optional memory card. For maneuverability, the drive can be detached from the display unit with a cable.

Auto calibration on the SJ-301 can be initiated with a numerical entry. An auto-sleep function automatically powers the device off after five minutes of inactivity. Calculation and display parameters are customizable. The Go/No-go€ judgment function operates with maximum value of 16% rule option, and 3-parameter upper and lower limits setting.

The Surftest has a digimatic SPC cable for data collection, and RS-232C or SPC output. A memory card slot supports additional data storage. It is compatible with Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 operating systems, and Microsoft Excel 2000, Excel 2002, and Microsoft Office Excel 2007. The unit comes with a carrying case that has a belt loop attachment.

A surface roughness tester, also known as a profilometer, surftest, roughness gage, surface finish gage, or surf roughness tester, is a device used to inspect and measure surface roughness of flats, rounds, sloping planes, and recesses in machined, ground, or polished metal and non-metal surfaces. It is used for metrology in shop, metalworking, manufacturing, and quality control (QC) applications. Surface roughness testing is a type of form measurement that identifies surface profiles such as grooves and recessions, commonly known as peaks and valleys, of a surface. A roughness tester traces a surface profile using a skid-type (contact-type) method with a tracer tip such as a diamond stylus and piezo-electric detection to calculate roughness. Common types of parameters include Ra (roughness average), Rv (maximum profile valley depth), and Rsk (skewness), and assessed profiles. Profiles can have valuations such as cutoff, sampling, traversing, and evaluation-types of lengths. A surface roughness tester can have analog or digital display. A surface roughness tester can be portable, handheld, or desktop-type.

Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and systems. The company was founded in Tokyo in 1934 and formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963, which is headquartered in Aurora, IL.
