Mahler: Lieder
Mahler was a composer in which Fischer-Dieskau excelled. Few can rival him in his range and beauty of tone in conveying the heartache of the young traveller in the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen. Kubelik is a most persuasive Mahlerian too, and the 1968 sound is quite excellent. The Kindertotenlieder receive a superb performance too, recorded in 1963, with B”hm providing imaginative accompaniment. The 4 RÂckert Lieder complete a totally successful collection. Penguin Guide*** (Song cycles) These are in truth superbly percipient performances, full of understanding and wonderfully poignant, and as Karl B”hm's accompanying is extremely sympathetic and expressive, this is a record to treasure. Gramophone, August 1964 (Kindertotenlieder and RÂckert-Lieder)
