Lubrican's Short Stories - Volume Nine
Volume Nine of Lubrican's Short Stories is a variety pack of action, suspense, romance and humor, consisting of three of Lubrican's longer short stories. While the count might be less than usual for a short story volume, the amount of text is actually larger than normal.
We begin with "How I Bagged A Cougar", an unlikely and unexpected romance between a young man and his mother's best friend. He has always admired her ... okay, lusted after her ... but what he doesn't know is that when he turned eighteen, she started thinking about him as a man, rather than the boy she'd known for all those years. She comes up with a lame-brained scheme which, instead of being a zipless fuck, as she intended, turns into something much, much more. This story won first place in a contest ad an Internet reading site.
Next comes a story written based on a challenge to take two people who don't speak each other's languages, and yet must spend a significant amount of time together, which causes them to develop feelings for each other. My answer to that challenge was to have a cowboy save an Indian girl's life and take her back to her people. It's called "The Cowboy Who Spoke No Indian." Of course it's more complicated than that. He was a bad guy, who did a good thing. And when there is both bad and good in your life, your life gets very complicated.
Finally we just go stark raving goofy in "The Soccer Mom Who Saved The Earth." The title says it all. How could a soccer mom defend the entire Earth from alien invaders? How could one woman take on and vanquish an entire ship full of the race that has conquered every galaxy they've arrived at before this? What killed the aliens in "War Of The Worlds" was bacteria that couldn't be seen without a microscope. The weapon our heroine uses to vanquish the invaders can't be seen at all. This one is all for laughs, folks. If it had a foreword, it would say: "I'm going to tell you a joke now. It's a reeeeally long joke ..."
