As a personal favor, U.S. Deputy Marshal Custis Long arrives in Good Hope, Arizona, to help his boss€s old friend, a former Texas Ranger named Don Carter. But Carter is a proud, obstinate son of a gun, not likely to accept help€"though he€s happy to give it, especially to the down-and-out. So Longarm poses as a drifter named Custis Short, who€s willing to work for food, and Carter takes him in.
