The ancient fishing village of Guilin on the Li River in southeast China has grown into one of the most popular tourist spots in China. Guilin's beauty is legendary, the name means, Forest of Sweet Osmanthus, owing to the large number of fragrant Sweet Osmanthus trees located in the city.
One of the most popular legends in Chinese history is the romantic tale of Liu San Jie (Third Sister Liu). Liu was a beautiful young girl who was born in Guilin. Liu had an extraordinary singing voice and won all the local competitions. Liu sang songs that honored the common man and berated the powerful for their selfishness.
Liu's beauty and talent attracted two suitors. One was another singer, a handsome young man who Liu loved too. The other suitor was an evil, rich man who already had a wife. He did not want to marry Liu, he just wanted another concubine. The rich man became obsessed with Liu and planned to take her by force, so Liu and her lover decided to escape. The evil man followed them with his guards and caught up with them by the Li River. To escape certain death for him and slavery for her, they grabbed each other's hands and jumped into the river, drowning together.
