About "Out with a Bang."
John Rain, a skilled assassin with over thirty-five years of hard living behind him, is a man looking for personal time to reflect. Retire? Perhaps. As a survivor in a line of work where men rarely see their 40th birthday, Rain is still near the top of his game at sixty. Determined to take time to consider his long-term options, he creates a new identity and drops off the grid.
He travels to Seattle, Washington, where he plans to attend a reunion with his old Vietnam military unit, enjoy live jazz and contemplate his future. His goals are simple: reflection and relaxation. What he encounters when he arrives, however, is anything but relaxing.
Rain discovers that the twin sister of an old Army buddy has gone missing. Mark Jackson had fought alongside Rain and Jimmy “Crazy Jake†Calhoun as part of a joint military-CIA collaboration during the Vietnam War. The three men had been deposited into the bush for several weeks at a time, without food, cut off from communication and disavowed by the government. It fell on them to complete the most clandestine, risky and bloody assignments of the war. Mark had saved Rain’s life on many occasions, and the reverse was also true.
Though he had not seen Mark in nearly forty years, Rain does not hesitate to offer assistance when he hears Emma Jackson is missing. His investigation uncovers a complex drama involving a corrupt police officer, the Russian mob and a drug lord. Rain soon discovers Emma is being held captive, to be used as a pawn, part of a deadly agenda. Millions of dollars had been stolen from the Russians by an unscrupulous undercover agent during a gun racketeering bust. The drug lord has discovered a link between Emma and the whereabouts of the money.
With the clock ticking and no resources at his disposal, Rain uses his wits and experience to uncover pieces of a puzzle that will lead him to Emma. Along the way, he engages two very unlikely allies, both of whom have agendas of their own. Though his usual methodology involves causing deaths that look natural, John Rain has no time for careful planning. He systematically chips away at the drug lord’s organization, creating a bloody swath in his wake. Those who stand in his way are left dead or in a state of chaos.
When a rescue attempt is thwarted, Rain seeks an alliance with an unlikely source, the Russian mob, setting up a nail-biting confrontation when the principle characters all meet in an explosive finale.
"Rain sizzles in this action-packed adventure."
"I was very surprised to enjoy this book. I bought it because I saw the words John Rain. I thought it was another Barry Eisler book. I realized that it wasn't after the first chapter. Not by Eisler but a very good read. I enjoyed this writer very much."
