Hungarian Szur Pattern

Folkwear #150 Hungarian Szur. Worn by herdsmen in Hungary as far back as the Middle Ages, the Szur is a dramatic, mid-calf length coat worn over the shoulders as a cape. It fastens just below the neckline with a decorated buckle. The Szur is traditionally made of wool felt with the sleeves sewn together at the wrist and used as pockets. The large lapels and broad collar may be lavishly decorated with embroidery or applique (designs are included in pattern). Our pattern includes the traditional Szur (View A), with optional directions for cutwork applique; and for a simpler, more contemporary version (View B) that includes pockets, a lined lapel and collar back, and finished hems on the sleeves and bottom. View B eliminates the decoration, elaborate buckle closure and back vent. Our original Szur (at far right) was made by a tailor from the Great Plains region of eastern Hungary. It is of white felt with black edgings accented in yellow and green. Red felt cutwork applique creates a stylized flower and leaf design over the white body of the coat. The buckle is attached to the front of the Szur with black leather straps, perforated in a design to reveal the red felt underneath. .
