How to Reface Your Kitchen for Under $1500
Are your old kitchen cabinets are an eyesore but you cannot afford the cash outlay to have a professional upgrade? Perhaps your significant other has been dropping hints about how much they would love an updated kitchen but you assume you would have to renovate the whole room. If you are the DIY type, you may have thought about refacing your kitchen cabinets but are terrified that you will somehow screw it up and take your kitchen from €œtired€ to €œterrible€Â. That, in turn, will cause you to spend the money you don€t have and will, most likely, have your significant other dropping a new variety of hints.
I am not a carpenter. I am not a builder. I am not a skilled trades person. I consider myself handy and I have a few tools in my basement. With those qualifications in mind, I spent a couple of weeks (working part time) and converted a tired 1970€s kitchen with maple veneer and solid maple cabinet doors and drawer fronts for less than $1500.
Many companies advertise that they can reface your kitchen in one day (although they don€t tell you how much the job will cost). Maybe they can but that is only after they come to your place to measure everything, get your signature on the contract, get your deposit, most likely order the doors and drawer faces from the same places that you can, most likely order the veneer and the hardware from the same places that you can, apply the finish and let it dry, and then return with a crew. Of course, they will also charge you thousands and thousands of dollars for their services. The truth is that you should be able to do just as good a job for a fraction of the cost and have that feeling of satisfaction that you can only get from doing something yourself.
If you have confidence in yourself then this can be a great project for you. If you don€t have the money to pay a company then this can be a very cost effective project for you. Maybe you are like me in that I could have paid a company to do the work but I enjoyed the challenge and would prefer to spend my money elsewhere.
This book is written to encourage and motivate those of you who know they they can do this but need that little nudge to get started.
Enjoy.
