How to Hunt Deer Up Close: With Bows, Rifles, Muzzleloaders and Crossbows

To be more successful as a deer hunter, learn all you can about the animal, the wind, the temperature and the techniques required to get in close. In this book, you'll read about some of the best hunters in the nation who know how to hunt deer close, including one of the greatest archers who ever lived, Howard Hill. John E. Phillips shares his own deer stories and hunting tips from 50 years of experience, and you'll have the opportunity to watch 25 videos explaining the latest research on deer movement. Now contains a bonus chapter with recipes for two full meals using venison!

"We've known John for over 30 years and he's absolutely right about hunting close. Terry and I can both shoot well out past 50 yards. But, to make a good video and to take an ethical shot, we like to get deer within 30 yards or less. In order to get deer that close, we scout intensively, we use trail cameras to pattern the deer, we have multiple stand sites to hunt under different weather conditions and we practice many of the same techniques that John recommends in this book. If you want to take more big deer, this book is a must." --Mark and Terry Drury

From the Author:

In this book, I've talked to some of the best deer hunters I know about the techniques they use to get close to deer. A prime example is a friend of mine named Jerry Simmons, who took 37 deer in 38 days hunting in Alabama, back when the limit was one buck per day. He harvested all 37 animals with a longbow, not taking any shots over 20 yards. For me, the sport of deer hunting is about getting as close as possible to an animal, just as much as it is about taking the animal. I started hunting for deer while in elementary school and my friends and family hunted with shotguns and buckshot, which meant we had to get close to the deer to take them. Over 50 years of deer hunting, I've learned that your odds go up tremendously for taking an animal if you get in close. Hunting close also may be one of the reasons I particularly enjoy blackpowder hunting and bowhunting. I know your chances for a quick kill are drastically better when you're close to an animal. To be more successful as a deer hunter, learn all you can about the animal, the wind, the temperature and the techniques required to get in close to the animal.
