Horseshoe Curve
A path gradually elevates, momentum builds after it careens around one corner and then another, and then ultimately trails into the distance. Such is the horseshoe curve, and an apt description of the latest album from composer, bandleader and guitarist Trey Anastasio. And momentum is the key - the Horseshoe Curve is a journey, an inventive exploration of the big band funk that Trey has been steeped in for the larger part of the decade. Instrumental from start to finish, Horseshoe Curve showcases Trey's Afro-Cuban influenced improvisations, replete with 4-part horn arrangements, tight breaks, multiple percussionist, and of course Anastasio's soulful nimble guitar work. As the tracks spiral and build, the energy is frenetic, ferociously funky and at times exhilarating. A hybrid of previously unreleased studio and live recordings made with several of Anastasio's larger ensembles, the Horseshoe Curve is an engaging and cohesive listen from start to finish, from any point in the curve.
