After spending time in prison for something that he didn't do, he has now decided to stop trying to please anyone but himself. Now is his time to live life as he sees fit, where he wants, how he wants, with whom he wants.
The deception of life that no one tells you about is that it isn't about momentous times or those serious decisions you get to think about and worry over. It really is just one long string of day to day stuff and any seemingly inconsequential decision can tangle up that string of day to day things and include everyone in your life in the mess.
