United States Astronauts L Gordon Cooper, Jr, and Charles Conrad, Jr, were the pilots for the Gemini 5 spaceflight launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida, on August 21, 1965 and ended on August 29, 1965 Their 120-orbit space journey lasted 190 hours and 56 minutes, during which time they travelled more than three and one-third million miles This was the first spaceflight for Astronaut Conrad but the second flight for Astronaut Cooper who flew a solo two-day mission in the Faith 7 May 15/16, 1963 On that mission he made 22 orbits in 34 hours and 20 minutes Cooper was born in Oklahoma in 1927 He has a bachelor of science degree in engineering and is a veteran test pilot He comes to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration from the U S Air Force where he is a Lieutenant Colonel He is married and has two daughters, ages 16 and 15 Conrad was born in Pennsylvania in 1930 His science degree is in aeronautical engineering and he also is a veteran test pilot He comes to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration from the United States Navy where he holds the rank of Lieutenant Commander He is married and has four sons, ages 5 through 11 National Aeronautics and Space Administration Washington, D C
