During the dark days of 1941, gliding menacingly below the water's surface, German U-Boat "wolf packs" prowled the North Atlantic. Their prey, Allied ships carrying desperately needed supplies to the besieged British Isles. Within the cramped confines of the U-Boat's engine room, amidst the roar of diesel engines the engineering crew worked feverishly to keep their boat running under extraordinary conditions. Volunteers all, U-Boat crews endured a rigorous selection process, from which only 15% were ultimately admitted into the ranks of the German Navy's undersea fleet. Between 1939 and 1942 the wolf packs freely roamed the seas, wreaking destruction upon Allied shipping. Their reign of terror faded later in the war, however, when the Allied navies of Great Britain and the United States fought back with new anti-submarine weapons and tactics. The new Allied offensive rapidly eclipsed the victorious reign of the U-Boat and by war's end; it was they who became the hunted.
