Fair Trade Recycled Earrings - BICYCLE Design
These earrings are made by Afrika Pamoja, a Kenyan fair trade social entrepreneurial project where young women who learned to make handicrafts can earn a living. These young women joined the Teenage Mothers and Girls Association of Kenya to learn vocational skills and chose craft-making from the available training programs including secretarial, hair-dressing, and tailoring. The women carry on the long tradition of making jewelry from recycled materials, an income-generating vocation for many men and women in the Kisumu, Kenya area. Takataka is the name of the collection. Takataka means TRASH in Kiswahili. The materials include wire from old electric motors, soda and beer cans, bottle caps, and discarded phone cards.
