Establish the College of Electors: How the Electoral College Is Failing and Why a Direct, National Election Is Not the Answer

The main idea of this pamphlet is that the Electoral College, the institution by which Americans elect the president, is failing to do its job. The Electoral College was meant to filter public opinion and put a barrier between the people and the president, a barrier which would preserve impartial justice and equal treatment under the law. It is failing to do that. What should Americans do with this failed institution? Some scholars and pundits argue that the Electoral College is undemocratic and should be abolished. They argue that the country should elect the president through a direct, national vote. Their argument is flawed. The Electoral College is failing, but it must be strengthened so that it can fulfill its function in the constitutional system of American government. This pamphlet explains that constitutional system of government, the reasons why the Founders established that system, the role of the Electoral College in that system, why those scholars and pundits are wrong to abolish the Electoral College, and how it can be reformed to preserve equal justice under the law for all Americans.
