What are the dangers of thumb sucking?
Often seen in the early stages, thumb-sucking may cause; chapped lips, cracked skin, calluses and finger nail infections. Most children experience only these minor effects of thumb-sucking and tend to stop around the age of 2. It's widely documented that thumb-sucking should be actively discouraged through toddler years to avoid more serious effects, which can include; Hindered speech development Misaligned teeth, if thumb-sucking continues as adult teeth begin to grow An asymmetrical bite. The soft jaws of a child can begin to change shape, making room for a thumb if sucked too hard and too often. Made from soft non toxic silicone, Dr Thumb fits over and securely fastens to the thumb of either hand. It does not restrict the child's ability to play and it does not cause any discomfort. Breaking the vacuum Dr Thumb works by breaking the vacuum created when sucking a thumb. Ensuring a small gap between the child's thumb and the guard, it allows air to flow making it impossible to suck. Whilst the child will still be able to put their thumb in their mouth not having that 'sucking sensation' will remove the child's pleasure of the habit - without creating any negative feelings. The habit is broken naturally, almost unconsciously. 92% Success Rate As with refraining to exercise any habit, this process to stop thumb-sucking is quick. Dr Thumb claims a 92% success rate with the habit often broken within as little as 2 weeks, although it is recommended Dr Thumb be worn day and night for a period of 4 weeks. If however, your child sucks their right and left thumbs interchangeably showing little to no preference between the two - then you should consider two guards to break the habit.
