Based on Schiller's classic tale of woe under the Spanish throne Verdi's Don Carlo was an early success that was sorely neglected outside of Italy for parts of the 20th century. This production is part of a powerful revival in Rome in the 1950s an electrifying production presented in historic mono to preserve the tone of the times.
