Erin, Brynne, Ruby, Al, Brunhilda, Stacey Lee, Jenna, and Ashley return in this sequel four years later and are ready to battle the entanglements of adolescence. While Al and Brynne prepare excitedly for their senior year of high school, Erin, one year younger, struggles with her impossible standards for perfection. Ruby, Stacey Lee, and Jenna have just turned thirteen and have discovered boys while Ashley, freshly fifteen, must come to grips with the loss of her father. Meanwhile, Brunhilda, a freshman in high school, struggles to fit into a shallow world that is seemingly unready to accept her. Each of the girls still lives in the Clover Valley Orphanage with David and Erica, and they must count on each other for support as they strive to make it through some of the difficult and complex issues and events that they face. When Brynne has a difficult decision to make, and while Erin suffers with self-doubt, readers are reminded of times when they felt most alone and times when they found out who their real friends truly were.
