Celestron's EdgeHD 8 Optical Tube is a Aplanatic Schmidt Telescope design producing aberration-free images across a wide visual and photographic field of view. The optical system on the EdgeHD 8 was designed to give an astrograph quality flat focal plane all the way to the edge of the field of view as well as reducing the off-axis star coma. The EdgeHD 8 gives off TRUE astrograph quality. While many optical designs advertise as "astrograph" quality, they actually only produce pintpoint stars across a curved focal plane. For some this may be acceptable when observing but stars will appear out of focus at the edge when used with a flat chip sensor of a digital camera. The difference in EdgeHD optics is that they produce a focal plane more than three times flatter than that of a standard Schmidt Cassegrain telescope and dramatically flatter than other competitive coma-free designs. The use of the EdgeHD guarantees you visibly sharp stars across some of the largest CCD chips made available today.

The new optical design and redesigned tube allow you to get the most out of your optics each and every night. Holding the mirror into place and reducing image shift when rotating are the flexible tension clutches incorporated in the design of the EdgeHD. These flexible rods hold the mirror into place without using any pressure or force on the mirror assembly. This helps keep the image center in the eyepiece or chip.
