Imagine a world where debt could mean permanent servitude, where a debtor or anyone associated with him could receive a life sentence for no crime other than being connected with someone who owed money he or she would never be able to pay. And it was not just servitude. Those who were made to serve had no rights whatsoever. They could be used or punished in any way the owner desired, and no one would care. There were no laws to protect them. As the auctioneer announced, they were €œlegal for all purposes€Â.
Such was the case for the beautiful Kristjana, working for a religious order as a nurse providing medical services to the poor and needy. She would not have been blamed for the religious order€s financial failure, but borrowing money to continue the good works after financial support was no longer available, and being unable to meet the payments on time, was enough to have Kristjana and the other nurses sentenced to become the personal property of the highest bidder.
And the highest bidder was, of course, former slave agent Quentin Scales, now business partner of the notorious, sadistic Rupert Caine. For Kristjana, it must surely turn out to be pure hell as the latest addition to Caine€s household, and yet, perhaps, there was something incredible arousing about what Caine was doing to her€¦
