What is 550 cord? Parachute cord is the lightweight nylon cord used in the suspension lines of US parachutes during World War II. Soldiers found this cord very useful for many things. Now it is used as a general purpose utility cord by both the military and civilians. The braided sheath has a high number of interwoven strands giving it a smooth texture. The all-nylon construction makes parachute cord weather and fade resistant. While the military has no overall diameter requirements most cord typically measures about 4mm in diameter.
Would I ever need 550 cord? We certainly hope you don't but life can be unpredictable.
