Beethoven: Symphony 9 " Choral "
Carlo Maria Giulini recorded a fine Ninth Symphony a couple of decades ago for EMI in London, and that performance is still available at a rock bottom price. It's preferable in every way to this heavy, dreary trudge through Beethoven's theoretically explosive music. The idea that conductors only deepen their interpretations as they age is nonsense. Most of them just get sleepy and slow, and that's certainly the case here. A pity. --David Hurwitz
