FRANKLIN INSTITUTE SCIENCE LAUREATES (2001) Nine scholars sign a program of the Benjamin Franklin awards ceremony. Program of the 2001 Awards Dinner Philadelphia's venerable Franklin Institute, founded in 1824, bestows its prestigious Benjamin Franklin Awards annually to important contributors to major fields of scientific inquiry. The awards have been called "America's Nobel Prizes." The signers here (except Burstein, an earlier winner) were honored in 2001. Telecommunications engineer PAUL BARAN (1926-2011) won the Bowers Science Award for development of packet-switching and contribution to creation of the internet. ROB VAN DER VOO was honored in Earth Science (2001) for his contributions to the field of paleomagnetism and reconstruction of continental positions. IRWIN MARK JACOBS received the Bowers Business Leadership award for his contributions to telecommunications: CDMA technology, and business and scientific leadership in telephony. JUDAH FOLKMAN (1933-2008) scored a Franklin in Life Science for founding the field of angiogenesis research. BERNARD WIDROW won the Franklin in Electrical Engineering for developing the LMS algorithm and pioneering work in adaptive signal processing. ALAN H. GUTH won a Franklin in Physics for proposing the inflationary scenario (for expansion of the early universe). K. BARRY SHARPLESS won a Franklin in Chemistry for development of catalytic oxidation chemistry with proper handedness. MARVIN MINSKY received a Franklin in Computer and Cognitive Science for his research in artificial intelligence, development of a conceptual model of the mind.
