Arizona Highways Magazine, March 1975

In this issue:

Coral, the Red Gold of Native American Jewelry. Excerpted from a monograph by Basilio Liverino, based on an illustrated seminar presented in Italy. One full page of color photographs; one full page of text.

Traders and Trading Posts, by Marjel de Lauer. Within the next few years, Indian trading posts and traders will become extinct .... many have already crumbled into dust. Pottery, rugs and jewelry command premium prices. Ten pages of text and color photographs.

Old Pawn, by magazine editor Joseph Stacey. We see old pawn jewelry as an intimate relic of a people and a culture which is slowly and inevitably disappearing into history. . . . The more we learn of Indian silversmiths and old pawn jewelry the more we are convinced that the old silversmiths produced a higher standard of their art for Indians than they did for traders and non-Indians. 16 pages of text, color photos, and color artwork.

The New Traders, by Stacey, with excerpts from Margery Bedinger's authoritative source book Indian Silver. The economic changes in the Indian jewelry business have been as spectacular and dynamic as the changes in art forms and techniques. Six pages, with color and b&w photos and illustrations.

Artwork: 2-page reproduction of Hopi Dancers by Fritz Scholder.

The Turquoise Ostrich. Editor Stacey writes: When the ostrich buries its head in the sand he does not see the world as it is. And so with the public attitude regarding turquoise.

The Doctors Trading Post Guide, map by Doug Rolan. Dr. Hayes Caldwell and Dr. Oscar Thoeny commissioned artist Marjorie Reed, who had grown up on the reservations, to research and restore as accurately as possible, on canvas, many of the old posts. Peter Rogers was commissioned to reproduce some of the more recent posts.

Also, a page of notes on trading posts mentioned in this issue.
