Located in mountainous Boone, North Carolina, Appalachian State University is one of the top schools in the South Eastern United States. In 2001, Time magazine recognized it as "school of the year". Founded in 1899, the school became part of the University of North Carolina system in 1927. The Appalachian State Mountaineers field 20 varsity teams in the Southern Conference. In football, the Mountaineers are the first Division I program to win three consecutive national championships since Army accomplished the feat in 1944, 1945, and 1946.
