Subject: FRONT SIDE: Emblem 10: 'Dienende teer ick uyt - Serviendo consumor - Pour servir ie meurs.' (Serving I exhaust.) Meaning that while serving love I exhaust myself. Like an oil lamp which lights others, but exhausts its oil. These emblems have the title surrounding the image in Dutch (top-left), latin (top-right) and French (bottom). The image shows a real life love scene and a symbolic scene with cupid. Below the image is a 2 line verse in Dutch Latin and French. BACK SIDE: Emblem 12: 'Ick voed een wond - Vulnus alo - Ie nourris une playe.' (I feed a wound.) Meaning that love feeds a wound when an arrow hits the eye of a heart. Description: This attractive original old antique print / plate originates from: 'P.C. Hoofts Mengelwerken ...', 1704 edition. The engravings were first used in Hoofts 'Emblemata amatoria' in 1611.
Artists and Engravers: Author: Pieter Corneliszoon Hooft (1581-1647), a famous Dutch Poet and writer. The engraver of these emblems is unclear. Some mention that they are possibly by Christof Le Blon (d. 1665). Christof Le Blon married Susanna Barbara Merian daughter of the artist and engraver Matthaeus Merian the Elder (1593-1650).
