Anna Karenina (Maude Translation) (Carefully Crafted Classics® Book 1)
This beautiful edition of Anna Karenina is worthy of a great literary classic. If you are tired of inferior translations, poor formatting, and typos, then this is the edition for you!
Carefully Crafted Classics strives to publish the electronic equivalent of the finest print editions. Our editions are attractively formatted and painstakingly proofread with attention to the smallest details. We aim to be the luxury line of e-publishing at a modest price.
We are pleased to offer Anna Karenina, called by William Faulkner the best novel ever written, in the excellent translation by Louise and Aylmer Maude (1918). Almost all of the other English language Kindle editions of Anna Karenina use the faulty, unrevised translation by Constance Garnett (1901) (and some do not even name Garnett as the translator). The Maude translation is also used in notable print editions, including the Oxford World's Classics and Everyman's Library editions and (in somewhat revised form) the Norton Critical Edition.
Praise for the Maude Translation of Anna Karenina
From Encyclopedia of Literary Translation into English. Classe, Olive (Ed.). Chicago, IL: Fitzroy Dearborn Publishers, 2000. Vol. 2, 1405-1406:
"None of the early translations of Anna Karenina is acceptable [including the unrevised Garnett (1901)]. The appearance of the Maude version (1918) represents a turning point . . . . Louise and Aylmer Maude knew Tolstoy's pre-revolutionary Russia; she was born and educated there, and he spent many years in Moscow. They knew Tolstoy personally and had the benefit of consultation with him and his approval of their translations."
