An Introduction to Environmental Toxicology Third Edition

As with the first (student) and second editions, An Introduction to Environmental Toxicology Third Edition offers a general introductory text on the scope and basic principles for as well as the relevant concepts of environmental toxicology. To this end, the book is organized into four sections: I. Toxicologic Concepts and Environmental Concerns (Chapters 1 – 5); II. Bioaccumulation and Biodisposition of Toxicants (Chapters 6 – 10); III. Nature and Effects of Environmental Toxicants (Chapters 11 – 17); and IV. General Considerations and Special Foci (Chapters 18 – 23). 1. Scope and Principles for Environmental Toxicology; 2. Environmental Changes and Environmental Health; 3. Environmental Pollution and Regulatory Agencies; 4. Occurrence and Types of Environmental Toxicants; 5. Fate and Transport of Toxicants in the Environment; 6. Bioaccumulation of Persistent Environmental Toxicants; 7. Uptake and Distribution of Toxicants; 8. Metabolism/Biotransformation of Xenobiotics; 9. Adverse Action/Toxic Response; 10. Factors and Conditions Affecting Toxicity; 11. Air Pollutants – I. Inorganic Gases; 12. Air Pollutants – II. Particulate Matter; 13. Volatile Organic Compounds; 14. Toxic and Radioactive Metals; 15. Pesticides and Pesticide Residues; 16. Persistent Toxic Substances; 17. Biological and Physical Toxic Agents; 18. Environmental Mutagenesis/Carcinogenesis; 19. Reproductive Toxicity and Endocrine Disruption; 20. Occupational Toxicology/Industrial Chemicals; 21. Food Toxicants and Toxic Household Substances; 22. Human Health Aspects of Ecotoxicology; 23. Environmental Health Risk Assessment. The content difference between the Second and this Edition is minimal. In addition to having corrected several typos found in the Second Edition, this Third Edition has made minor refinements and updated the status of several contemporary issues discussed in the text (e.g., H1N1 flu, SARS/MERS, persistent organic pollutants). In particular, Chapter 17 has now added the U.S. Code as a (legal) source for the definition of toxin. This Third Edition has also included in its back cover the encouraging book review conclusion given by Prof. Arthur L. Frank, M.D., Ph.D., chair of the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health, Drexel University School of Public Health, as reproduced below (excerpted from IJEOH 2013, 19:248): “Taken together, these sections and chapters add up to a book that is readable, understandable and appropriate to how we now find matters in the real world. In summary, I recommend this book (second edition) as excellent for students, useful to others wishing to begin to understand the topics covered, and feel it benefits from both the case study approach and thought provoking reviews at the end of each chapter.”
